Superintendentsâ Lessons Learned
The superintendent might suppose that an unprepared board is less likely to question her recommendations or the way she manages the district. That would be an unfortunate view, however, because running a district should be a team effort between an informed board and its superintendent. When either part of the team does not uphold its side of the collaboration, the entire district is likely to suffer in the long run. This is one reason there are laws specifying how many board meetings a board member can miss without being subject to replacement. The superintendent should do all she can to keep the board informed and prepared to do its job at board meetings. When a board member appears to be unable to fulfill the requirements of the job, the superintendent and board president should meet with the board member to seek a solution.
